AI Types

AI is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning.

Types of Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Explained Simply

Artificial Intelligence can be divided into different types, based on how smart it is and what it can do. Think of AI like a growing child – from baby stage to adult stage.

AI types in two ways

  1. Based on Capabilities (how powerful AI is).
  2. Based on Functionalities (how AI works and behaves).

→ Based on Capabilities

This is about how strong or powerful an AI system is compared to humans.

🔹 Narrow AI (Weak AI)

  • Works only for a specific task.
  • Example: Alexa, Google Translate, Face Unlock.
  • Think of it like a specialist doctor who only knows one area.

🔹 General AI (Strong AI)

  • Can think and learn like humans in many fields.
  • Example: Not available yet (still research).
  • Like a human student who can study maths, art, sports, and languages.

🔹 Super AI

  • Future AI that will be smarter than humans.
  • Example: Only in movies like Jarvis from Iron Man.
  • Like a super-genius who is better than us in everything – logic, creativity, emotions.

→ Based on Functionalities

This is about how AI behaves or works in real life.

🔹 Reactive Machines

  • AI that only reacts to situations.
  • It doesn’t learn or remember.
  • Example: IBM’s Deep Blue (chess computer).
  • Like a mirror – it only shows what is in front of it.

🔹 Limited Memory

  • AI that can use past data for decisions.
  • Example: Self-driving cars (they remember traffic rules + past movement).
  • Like a driver who remembers what happened on the road a few seconds ago.

🔹 Theory of Mind

  • Future AI that can understand human emotions, needs, and thoughts.
  • Example: Still being researched.
  • Like a good friend who knows when you’re happy, sad, or angry.

🔹 Self-Aware AI

  • AI that can think about itself and become conscious.
  • Example: Doesn’t exist yet.
  • Like a human with self-awareness (knows “I exist”).
